Zappas Hair Salons in Berkshire & Hampshire Share Their Favourite 5 Ways To Stay Motivated While Social Distancing
Nothing about this time is normal and it’s completely natural to feel stressed and overwhelmed – and whilst there’s no magic pill for coping with a global pandemic, focussing on little things that offer support and motivation can help to alleviate some of these feelings.
Whether you’re trying out new recipes in the kitchen (sourdough making anyone?), streaming a yoga class, completing the Couch to 5k or walking with your kids: it’s important that you do what you can to move your body, release some energy, and take care of your physical and mental health during this unprecedented time.
If you started lockdown with the best intentions but, like many of us, have hit a ‘pandemic-plateau’, we’ve put together some of our top tips to help inspire you to stay sane and motivated during lockdown…
Manage Stress & Anxiety During Lockdown
You may find yourself feeling more anxious and stressed at this time, and may also be experiencing feelings of grief.
Thankfully, there are some wonderful tools available that can help us process such difficult emotions, including some brilliant (and FREE!) podcasts. Why not try Fearne Cotton’s “Happy Place” podcast, or ‘Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast’ by Caroline Foran – a practical, relaxed series with everything you need to hear to get on top of your anxious thoughts and feelings.
Move Your Body
Whilst it may seem an almost Herculean task to turn off Netflix, peel yourself off the couch and walk past from the snack cupboard – it really is a challenge worth undertaking. Countless studies have linked exercise with immune-boosting benefits and overall mental and physical well-being.
If you can, try going for a quick lap around the block or stream a free workout on YouTube. If you need further inspiration, try reading the fabulous “Jog On” by Bella Mackie, which helps to highlight the importance of physical exercise with helping to reduce anxiety.
Stay Connected With Friends and Family
Whilst ‘Zoom-Fatigue’ is an emerging phenomenon during the Covid-19 Lockdown, it’s important that you remain connected to your friends, family and loved ones however you are safely able to at this time. Reach out to them and share your experiences thoughts and feelings, we can almost guarantee that they’re feeling similarly.
Organise something fun such as a “pub quiz”, family game night, or even a birthday party, baby shower or hen party and make a night of it! Decorate your backdrop, get dolled up and make some fun cocktails to enjoy during your party.
Create a Quiet Space at Home
Has your house become a catch all for a home office, gym, restaurant, bar, art studio, school or all of the above? Lockdown has meant that, for a lot of us, there are plenty of distractions at home that can leave you feeling a little more than overwhelmed, claustrophobic and disorganised.
Our advice is to create your own little zen area, a sanctuary, and adorn it with your favourite scented candle or reed diffuser (and maybe some headphones!) – scents can truly transform the energy of a room.
Take. A. Break.
Are you overwhelmed with back to back calls, Zoom meetings and homeschooling? Make sure that you book at least a weekly meeting with yourself.
Pencilling in some ‘me-time’ for reading, meditation or listening to your favourite music can help to calm and improve an otherwise stressful, challenging day.
Even if me time simply means running a bath, lighting a few candles and popping on a face mask – it’s important to give yourself some time to rest and recharge your batteries. A glass of wine at the side of the bathtub? Optional.
