Check Those Dates!
Most of us are guilty of holding onto a cupboard's worth of half used hair and beauty products, but did you know that they have expiry dates?!
It is essential to check the expiry dates on the side of your hair care bottles, and ditch any that are out of date. Expired hair & beauty products won’t perform as well as they used to, some will become lumpy and could even cause irritation. Hair sprays and other spray products are less likely to deteriorate and become contaminated, but it’s important to keep an eye on cream or liquid based products in tubs and bottles.
If you have any unopened products that are in date, a local charity may be glad to receive it.
Now you’ve decluttered, it’s a great opportunity to restock with fresh supplies of your favourite hair care products, or discover some new ones! Pop into your local Zappas salon where our experts will be happy to advise on the best products for your hair type and styling needs.
Spring Clean Your Brushes!
We know that dirty make-up brushes can harbour germs and cause breakouts on our skin, but we often forget that our hairbrushes are also a haven for nasties! Dirty hair, dead skin cells, styling products and oil can all build up in the bristles of your brushes, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. When using a dirty hairbrush, you'll also be blow drying grease and dirt back into clean hair, so it’s important to get into the habit of cleaning your brushes regularly.
Remove built-up hair weekly and regularly clean your brushes with a deep-cleansing shampoo. If you use a paddle brush or wooden brushes, check your manufacturers guidelines before washing, as water can get trapped inside and may result in the wooden finish getting spoilt. A quick swish of warm water should be sufficient to keep it clean.
Don't Forget Your Tools!
If you use heated styling tools on a regular basis, they can suffer from the same build up of dirt, products and bacteria as your brushes. Heated tools such as curlers, straighteners and wands should be cleaned on a regular basis, to ensure they work to their full potential and don't cause problems to your hair!
To clean your electrical styling tools, first make sure they are unplugged and never submerge them in water. Using a damp soft cloth or wipe, gently clean the styling plates. Never use a scouring pad on them as this can cause damage and always make sure your electrical tools are completely dry before using them.
An often over-looked area of dirt build up is your hairdryer filter. This build up can affect how well your dryer operates in the long run, so it’s well worth cleaning it regularly. You should be able to twist off the filter on the back, or on some models, simply unclip it. Wipe with a warm, damp (never wet) cloth or hand towel to remove dust, lint and grease, and ensure it is completely dry before using.
Upgrade Your Bedding
What has your bedding got to do with your hair? Well, no matter how soundly you sleep, you will spend hours each night with your hair and face scrunched into your pillow. The friction against cotton pillowcases can cause a bed head the next morning that can become fragile, look frizzy and be difficult to style. To prevent this, we’d recommend investing in a silk pillowcase if you can, or silk cases with cotton underneath for a more affordable option.
Dermatologists say that sleeping on a silky pillowcase can even make your skin less prone to wrinkles too, so it’s definitely worth a try!
Use The Right Products For The Season
We all know that we need to adapt our skin care products for different seasons, such as adding SPF or a heavier moisturiser, but did you know that the same goes for your hair care products?
As the weather brightens up during the warmer months, your hair can become dry and the colour may fade in the sun. Protect your hair from UV rays with a dedicated colour shampoo & conditioning team and an SPF spray. For better sun protection, you could consider covering your hair to preserve your hair colour.
If you aren’t sure which products or salon treatments are right for you, speak to your Zappas stylist. We’ll be happy to recommend the best ones for your needs.
